Before diving into gate training, ensure that your dog has a solid understanding of basic behaviors such as “Sit” and “Stay.” Begin by asking your dog to “Sit” or “Lie Down.” Once your dog is in position, ask your dog to “Stay” and then move toward the gate. If your dog tries to follow, gently guide the dog back to the desired spot. Once your dog is staying when you move toward the gate, practice opening the gate and walking through it. Reinforce your dog for remaining in a “Stay” position at each step.
In this video, KPA CTP Breanna Norris is practicing opening and closing a gate while her dog remains in the “Stay” position. She rewards her dog at each step: opening the gate, closing the gate and putting on her shoes, opening the gate again, and taking off her shoes. Once her dog waits at the gate consistently, the pair can practice in different locations with different doorways and gates.
With time and practice, you can help your dog understand that waiting at a gate is the “gateway” to a happier and safer life together!
