In this video, KPA Associate Director Gretchen Carey demonstrates how she makes vet visits more comfortable for her pups, Joe and Hank. Before the visit, Gretchen establishes a foundation of basic training skills at home, ensuring that her dogs know how to sit and settle on a mat. On the day of the vet visit, Gretchen brings the mat, along with clickers, treats, and a treat pouch.
At the vet’s office, Gretchen designates the mat as both a place for her dog to station while she checks in for the appointment and the place the dog should settle in the waiting room. She places the mat on the scale when it’s time for her dog’s weight-check. In each case, Gretchen reinforces her dog for focusing on her and for calm behavior. Utilizing treats and familiar props, Gretchen ensures that she and her dogs have stress-free and enjoyable visits at the veterinary clinic!
